Membership

Who can be a member:

Clinicians, scientists holding graduate medical or scientific qualifications and involved in clinical or basic research in GI-oncology would be eligible for membership.


The GI-OS will have life members, and a fraction of them can be honorary or ancillary members. 

The executive committee reserves the right to terminate the membership of any member if the member is found guilty of conduct unbecoming the society. Society envisages having international faculty of repute in respective fields of GI-Oncology who are willing to contribute significantly to society's education and research program be granted honorary international membership for a period of 2 years extendable for two terms. 


Application for Membership
Eligible individuals and institutions desiring to be members shall apply to the Secretary in a prescribed form. Such individuals should have attended at least one previous meeting as a delegate. All membership applications shall be initially scrutinised by the General Secretary/joint secretary, the President/Vice President & the treasurer. The Committee shall evaluate the bio-data, training, publications, research and other evidence of interest in the field. The report of the office
bearers will be placed before the Executive Committee for approval.

Privileges of Membership
Members of the Society shall have the privilege to attend and participate in all general meetings, conferences, lectures, discussions and demonstrations. They shall receive copies of all proceedings and publications of the Society from the date of their membership and attend special activities at such terms that the Executive Committee may fix from time to time.


Categories of membership
The members of the Society shall consist of the following 3 categories:
Life Member, Honorary Member.
Life Member:
(a) Members of the medical profession with a recognised graduate degree in life sciences, provided their work/research is related to GI-oncology.
(b) Basic scientists with a recognised graduate degree whose significant work/research is related to GI-oncology.
(c) Non-medical members of related specialities with a recognised graduate degree and whose significant work/research is related to GI-oncology.

Honorary Member
Eminent members of the medical profession or persons of high scientific attainment from any country may be elected honorary members to the Society (if so approved by the Executive Committee). Members desirous of proposing such members must send details of the person to the Secretary. An honorary member will not be entitled to hold office or vote at any meeting.


Ancillary Members
Patient advocacy or support group leaders or GI cancer survivors working with helping other patients in cancer patient organisations or as individuals may be allowed to become ancillary members. They will not be entitled to hold office or vote at any meeting.
